Herberton Mining Museum and Great Northern Mine

Surrounded by towering lemon-scented gums, the Herberton Mining Museum sits on the original Great Northern Mine site, a 24 hectare block of land claimed in 1880 by the legendary Jack and Newell, with 2 other men Brown and Brandon. This rich mine built Herberton to be a political and social centre for the Tablelands and the Far North.

A short walk through natural bush takes you to the three mine shafts where huge steam engines still sit, offering an insight into the lives of our pioneers.

The museum gives a great understanding of what was once the largest tin field in the world, with informative interactive displays.

The Herberton Mining Museum also offers a tin-panning experience and outdoor working machinery display. Manned by friendly and knowledgeable local volunteers, it has an accredited Visitor Information Centre attached.
