The area known as Old Wonga was owned by the Bell family and previously named Bells Beach. The name Wonga, an indigenous word meaning \u201cfar across the sea\/water\u201d was chosen in recognition of an original coconut plantation.<\/p>\n
Wonga Beach is a quiet refuge north of Mossman and offshore, there are views to Snapper Island; it is within easy access to the Daintree River and its rainforest habitat. This is mainly a residential community with few accommodation or shopping options. Locals love it but it may not be what you are after if you are looking for all the trappings of a tourist beach resort.
